‘On Beauty’ wins audience award in Chicago

Audiences at the 50th Chicago International Film Festival voted “On Beauty” as their favorite short film of the festival. Joanna Rudnick’s newest documentary won the festival’s Audience Choice Award after it played on Oct. 18 in front of a sold-out crowd as part of the film’s world premiere week. This award shows that the stories of Rick, Jayne and Sarah can inspire so many people and we are excited to use this momentum to bring the film to even more audiences. Jayne shines at screening for CPS students

Jayne Waithera traveled from her home in Kenya to Chicago to help kick off the the “On Beauty” world premiere. On Oct. 15, Jayne and Max Hoffman, a local high school student who has Marfan syndrome, addressed a theater full of enthusiastic young people after they watched a sneak preview of “On Beauty.” This special event was part of the Chicago International Film Festival’s educational outreach screening that shows various short films from the program to local students. World premiere week to end with sold-out crowd

“On Beauty” will play for a sold-out crowd on Saturday as part of the Chicago International Film Festival, which caps off a week of screenings that marks the film’s world premiere. The event starts at 1:15 p.m. at the AMC River East theater in Chicago.  Audience members will not only get to see the film, but they will also be able to share their stories with Joanna, Rick, Jayne and other special guests who have helped make this film possible. New York premiere at DOC NYC

“On Beauty” is ready to add another great festival to this fall’s lineup and announce a our New York City premiere at DOC NYC. The film is one of four short documentaries in the program Point + Shoot, which is scheduled to show at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the IFC Center. Get your tickets here! Jayne to attend premiere event in Chicago

Next week audiences in Chicago will get to meet Jayne Waithera – one of the extraordinary women featured in “On Beauty” – when she travels from Kenya for the film’s premiere at the Chicago International Film Festival. Jayne was raised by her grandmother after her mother abandoned her, a common occurrence for people with albinism in Eastern Africa. The society does not understand the specific health and safety needs. They are called “money” or “walking banknotes” because witch doctors will pay for their body parts. World premiere week includes Hot Springs

More exciting news during our world premiere week! “On Beauty” is set to screen at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in Arkansas as part of a shorts program called “Accidental Activist.”  The film will show twice: at 3:50 p.m. on Oct. 13 and at 9:50 a.m. on Oct. 18. We will be one of many Kartemquin films that will show at the festival and Kartemquin co-founder Gordon Quinn will be there to accept a career achievement award. We are very excited to announce another special screening this fall during the educational outreach program at the Chicago International Film Festival. The program brings together more than 200 Chicago Public School students for a special sneak preview of a variety of short films, including “On Beauty.” The students will have a chance to discuss “On Beauty” and the film’s impact with a post-screening panel after the screening.
