Sarah Kanney, one of the stars at the center of “On Beauty,” will be in Manhattan for the film’s New York premiere at the film festival DOC NYC.

Sarah was born with a genetic condition called Sturge-Weber syndrome, which leaves a port wine birthmark on her face and brain. She has needed numerous eye surgeries since she was four. In grade school, she was timid and her classmates teased her so harshly that she left for homeschooling in eighth grade.

Sarah’s refuge is racing motocross, which she has been doing competitively since she was 13 years old. She says it is freeing to put on her helmet and race around the track. Since meeting Rick, Sarah has grown into a confident, independent young woman. She got her first job, moved out on her own and studied to get her GED.

Sarah and her family will join Rick, Joanna and many of the other filmmakers at the sold-out screening at noon on Nov. 15 at the IFC Center.

Before the New York premiere, “On Beauty” will also screen at the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival on Nov. 9 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
