The first people to see “On Beauty” responded with wonderful praise and showed what a positive impact the film, the filmmakers and the stars can have on the movement to change how we see beauty. We want to thank everyone who came out to see us at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival in Arkansas and the Chicago International Film Festival during our world premiere week.

We got a great review from Pamela Powell on Reel Honest Reviews.

Audiences in both cities also shared wonderful reactions.

The film played for a full house at the 50th Chicago International Film Festival. Director/producer Joanna Rudnick and two of the film’s stars, Rick Guidotti and Jayne Waithera, came to Chicago for the event. Jayne came all the way from her home in Kenya and also attended an earlier special sneak peek screening for Chicago high school students.

Joanna, Rick and Jayne joined Liz Kaar, the film’s editor, and Mike McGowan, the president of the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation, on a post-screening panel that discussed the film, Rick’s work and the importance of changing public perceptions.

Here are some of the highlights of the panel discussion.

The film played in the shorts block “Accidental Activist” at Hot Springs, the oldest documentary film festival in North America. It was one of many other Kartemquin films that played including “The Homestretch,” “A Good Man” and the newly remastered “Hoop Dreams.” Kartemquin co-founder and artistic director Gordon Quinn also accepted a career achievement award and presented a masterclass on documentary ethics.

We hope to continue to build momentum as we prepare for showings in New York City at DOC NYC and Colorado Springs at the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival. We constantly work to ensure the film will have a broad and substantial reach and this week was another important step on the journey.
